Micole Bredean

Artist Statement

Micole's work over the years has been an expressive rendering of her own experiences. Born in Hungary, her themes chronicle her upbringing and personal involvement with lovers and family. The darkness of some events is alleviated by bright, iridescent colors and an inventive patterning of disparate surfaces. Emotions glow out of distant, dark memories.

Dense with imagery, Bredean's paintings balance a complex blend of spatial rhythms, where figure/ground relationships converge, entwine and diverge in an elaborate dance of emotional highs and lows. References to the Central European visual traditions of tapestry and mosaic convey her use of analogous colors within well-defined lines, while the neo-cubist elongation of limbs in her figures seems inspired by the eastern European sculptors Ossip Zadkine and William Zorach. Encroaching decorative spaces suggest the Austrain painter Gustav Klimt. This aside, Bredean's paintings transcend their influences and are authentically her own. Her paintings map Micole's personal journey toward independence of spirit.
