Artist Statement

Art is who I am. When I was six years old, my sister returned from California to Ramsey, NJ for a visit from college. She painted a painting that evening of a beautiful sunset; she had witnessed it over Arizona through the airplane's window. The next morning I woke to a quiet house. As I wondered into the dining room, I found her painting on the table with her paints, brushes and pallet. As I looked at the painting, I noticed a spot that was just not right. I fixed it for her. When the grown-ups awoke I was told that I shouldn't have painted on her painting, to which I explained I only was making it better. To my sister's credit, she said to my mother, maybe it was time for me to have my own set of paints. She offered a small canvas board to me and on it I painted a sunset. I still have it. You see, I was told from that time on that I had been blessed with a family talent, that it had been passed down from my Grandfather, Joseph Novak, a Hungarian-born scenic artist employed by the Metropolitan Opera House in NY for 42 years. He died just before I was born, but left behind some of the most beautiful artwork that I have ever seen. It was here that my love of the arts began. When I was a teen I studied oil painting at the Ridgewood School of Art, in Ridgewood, NJ. then attended the Philadelphia College of Art. At that time I was interested in working with other art forms such as pottery, mold making, glass blowing, and blacksmithing. After college I moved to Sarasota, FL, rented studio space and went into business making pottery. My pottery was sold through retailers like Burdines, other department stores and craft shows. Now, as I'm working in my own studio in Nokomis, FL, my love of oil painting has flourished. My rose paintings have been published several times by Victorian Homes Magazine, as my oil paintings and prints have sold nationally. My commissioned paintings are held by private collectors. I see beauty around us. To witness it and to be able to place it on canvas for your continued enjoyment is my gift.
